Jim - I thoroughly sympathize with you. Contanct EAA, as I understand that the petition to the FAA to allow recreational pilots to self-certify has either been re-filed, or will be shortly. As a couper, you could probably fly 90% of your flights exercising only recreational privileges. Also, don't forget soaring. I'm also a glider pilot, and the rules have allowed glider pilots to self-certify for decades. Ulltralights might be OK for some, but I'll take a glider any day.
