Hello, I'm writing on behalf of my mother, Amy Carpenter of Stuart, FL, who began her brief flying career in an Ercoupe during W.W.II, as her part in the stateside war effort. She is not aware of this correspondence. It's a surprise for her birthday in August.
She and her sister and my uncle took flying lessons out of Sky Harbor in Chicago. The Ercoupe was their trainer. Only my late Uncle soloed, however. Their motivation was to learn to fly in case civilian aviators were needed to support the war effort, ststeside. She is now 87 and sharp as a tack. She swims 50 laps each day, practices yoga and travels worldwide. She is not on the internet and asked me to take a photo of an Ercoupe she saw at Deer Valley Airport in Phoenix during a recent visit. I decided to search Yahoo to find out more about the only aircraft she ever flew. I was amazed at the info available. I had no idea that so many Ercoupes were still around. I've seen one or two restored units around Phoenix and a beautiful polished unit over at Whitman in California. But hundreds of N numbers, flight ready...wow! I have a request for any Ercoupers in her area of Florida. She'd love to climb aboard and "feel the wheel" for old time's sake. No flying, just a brief revisit at your convenience. Any volunteers? She drives and could meet at your home airport. However, she lives right next to Stuart's airport if you choose to fly in. Send me an e-Mail or give me a shout and I'll let her know time and place, etc. I'll be visiting her this summer and could easily coordinate the rendezvous at that time, as well. Thanks, in advance for this generous act of kindness for one of America's finest senior citizens and my favorite Mom.
