Leslie, Welcome to the group....of Coupers... We all think that the Coupe is the best of the best......unusual in most all aspects - way ahead of all the other airplanes.....
And, when it was first produced, it was way head and shoulders ahead of
all
the others.
I highly encourage you to find several books about Ercoupes:
The Ercoupe:, A Touch of Class - by Frank R. Saletri.
Frank loved coupes,
and compiled a large book of the history of the coupe -- magazine
clippings,
statistics, factory notes , lots of pictures, stories, etc. You will
probably
have to find another Couper to borrow a copy...... buit well worth it.
The Ercoupe, by Stanley Thomas, 1991.... another super
book on coupes. Now
out of print, but supposed to be another printing in the immediate
future...watch in this list...
From the Ground Up - the Autobiography of an Aeronautical
Engineer. Fred
Weick & James Hansen. Fred Weick's biography. He was a very unusual
engineer
and Man. Those of us luck enough to have met and talked with him found him
to
be "down to earth" and excited about life and machines - especially
airplanes
to the end...His vision of a safe to fly - everyman's airplane was
demonstrated in the design of the Coupe, and later in the Piper series of
metal airplanes. Again this is out of print, but I think you can find
copies.
I bought mine at Smithsonian Institute.
Paul Prentice, of Denton, Texas wrote two neat books about
Ercoupes.... they
are still available through the Ercoupe Owners Club, I think......
Fly-About
Adventuring and the Ercoupe; and This and That about the Ercoupe. Both
books
are valuable sources about Ercoupes, ---- flying them , and maintaining
them,
and just talking about them....
I hope you can find these references from local Ercoupe Owners, or
throught
