Pete- I don't know precisely what you want to discuss. Before we got our
plane, it had a vertical compass and electrical turn coordinator installed
by the previous owner. The TC works fine. The vertical compass seems to
need to be swung, as it appears to be off somewhat - we'll get to that
eventually.
As for venturi driven gyros - if you have them, and they work, I'd leave
good enough alone. A Vert. compass is NO replacement for a DG. A VC is
better than the old fashioned compass, but it surely isn't a DG.
Likewise with a turn coordinator. Roll info is presented, but no pitch
info is displayed. An attitude indicator presents both roll and pitch
info, and the TC should be only a backup instrument.
Venturis are great - I've flown thousands of hours with them. They don't
break like vacuum pumps, and unless you get into ice, they're foolproof.
Naturally, the gyro instruments themselves can fail, regardless of the
source of the vacuum to drive them.
I would like to have gyro att. indicator in our plane, but we don't. I
think this instrument is very helpful for nite flying, and in haze like we
get here in Ohio.

Some time ago...when this list was in its infant stages...a
discussion about vacuum systems took place. Specifically it had to do with
removing the vacuum system...with the venturi(s)...and replacing
directional gyro with, I think, a vertical card compass, and replacing
artificial horizon with, I think, a turn & bank indicator, and what
else???

If anyone has done this I would be interested in discussing it with
you.

Thanks!
