Ercoupe Memorandum no.56 states. For the aileron system the total play between one aileron and the other should not exceed 7/16 of an inch at the trailing edge. This seems like a lot. I replace them when it gets over a quarter inch. Most that I have replaced look like they had not been removed for lubrication since they were new. If you grease an old one it will only be tight for a short time. As soon as the grease moves out all the play is back. I checked every Ercoupe that I saw at Oshkosh, and only two had what I would call acceptable play. One of these had a little card saying that he had replaced the Heim ends.
