You probably have an existing hung famd process. Find its pid and kill it.
The thing was, there was no PID - it wasn't showing when I did ps aux.
But, I finally got some help from someone who told me about 'zapping' a
program, which finally let me restart it.
If all fails, reboot the box.
That was my next move, but I hate doing that...
