On the plus side, courier-authlib comes with its own authvchkpw module, which links against vpopmail, and may do what you want. That is, it can authenticate against any source that vpopmail provides. On the minus side, the developer (MrSam) doesn't use it, and therefore ifthere are bugs in it they are unlikely to be fixed.
