there are round about 20000 users with pop3.
yesterday i testet imap and in my mailbox there were nearly 2500 emails.
the imap clients like squirrelmail, outlook got a timeout error message.
there was not very much load on the systems. it seems that the courier took too long to get the headers.

is there anybody who can tell me something about the performance limits of courier ?

There are no performance limits in Courier. The only performance limits come from your file system. Courier does little more than open and read files, parse them, and send their contents over the network connection.

If you want to improve your performance, you have to analyze your system's I/O performance, and address any bottlenecks.
