Hmmm ... last August (was it July?) I did a whole rsync backup of the 
old RHAS4 mail server Courier IMAP hierarchy to the new RHEL5 one. All 
was reproduced perfectly, including empty Courier Maildir++ subfolders. 
1500+ users.

So that users never noticed the difference after downtime.

Same with the rsync backups the system makes every day.

My best guess is, that you weren't using rsync correctly. Hundreds of 
thousands of rsync users across the world might care to confirm this ;)
