Unfortunately, the stat() operation can be a very expensive in a folder with tens of thousands of messages, if it's on NFS.
Sadly, it's quite common to see POP3 being abused by configuring the mail clients to leave the mail on the server; as some kind of a deranged "IMAP- lite" configuration.
