This is probably a known bug in the system gamin library. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=667230 Unfortunately, it looks like OpenSUSE's gamin does not include this patch.
So two questions: first, any idea what's going on? And second, can anybody think of another service I could restart that might be involved in authentication?
If you find a running gam_server process, when this happens, you kill it, and you can log in again, you'll confirm that OpenSUSE's gamin is broken, and needs to be fixed.
