This unfortunately isn't us that is asking for this functionality - this is end-users that are using phone applications that rely on the SEARCH function, that default to searching for all items since 01-Jan-1970 (which is admittedly a little lazy!) - examples are GMail and Boxer (http://www.getboxer.com/).

That doesn't really answer the question: what exactly is that kind of a search trying to accomplish, by doing that?

As such, they regularly can't retrieve their emails correctly.

Maybe if their software was written by someone who actually understood IMAP, it would.

That's the point. There is no logical reason for any IMAP software to execute a search, like that. Whatever it's doing, it's doing it wrong.
