Well, you're a few steps closer.  courier's tcp daemon is at least
listening, which is start. fwiw, I can telnet to port 25 now (IP addr sent
off-list). Instead of getting an instant no-connection, I get a connection
that just hangs, and closes after 30 seconds (hmm. 30 seconds exactly.  
identd/dns lookup?). Maybe couriertcpd isn't being started with the correct
args (ie, can't find the esmtpd server?).

How did you install courier? Installed in standard locations? What's in your 
esmtpd.conf? (You didn't set it to use secure esmtpd, which prohibits normal 
esmtp connections, did you?)
