You didn't specify what kind of firewall. I had the same problem with one of my mailservers behind a Cisco PIX firewall. The solution was to disable the smtp fixup option so the firewall wouldn't mess with the SMTP traffic. On a PIX, the command is "no fixup protocol smtp 25".
