Hello,

Well, what I did, as someone earlier in this email list suggested, is
compile courier-imap like so:
./configure --without-authdaemon --with-authvchkpw

This solved my problem of having authentication fail randomly, until I
restarted the auth daemon.

I guess this is a confirmed bug.

Subject: [courier-users] Authenticating fails after a short period of time
via vchkpw (vpopmail)

Hello all. I've been using qmail, courier-imap and vpopmail for a long
period of while (1-1.5 years) and took the step and upgraded both
vpopmail and courier-imap while i had the chance when we recently
changed the mail server park. As Courier-imap and vpopmail works
perfectly, the authentication fails after a short period of time. I
actually have to restart the authentication daemon as often as once per
minute (under normal load) to get it to work 'stable'. I've been tuning
several options (maxperip to a higher level) and made courier-imap debug
the authentication steps. I haven't been lucky and found out why it
fails. Here is a brief
log of what is happening:

Dec 19 11:21:58 alambre imapd: LOGIN: DEBUG:
ip=[::ffff:192.168.179.100], command=CAPABILITY
Dec 19 11:21:58 alambre imapd: LOGIN: DEBUG:
ip=[::ffff:192.168.179.100], command=LOGIN
Dec 19 11:21:58 alambre imapd: LOGIN: DEBUG:
ip=[::ffff:192.168.179.100], [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Dec 19 11:22:03 alambre imapd: LOGIN FAILED, ip=[::ffff:192.168.179.100]
Dec 19 11:22:05 alambre imapd: DISCONNECTED,
ip=[::ffff:192.168.179.100], headers=0, body=0

I ran courier-imap-1.6.1.20021124 which failed the authentication, and
upgraded to courier-imap-1.6.1.20021211
a desperate attempt to see if somehow the problem was solved. It wasn't.

Here is some relevant authdaemon configuration:

authmodulelist="authvchkpw authcram"
authmodulelistorig="authcustom authcram authuserdb authvchkpw authldap
authpam"

For IMAP:

MAXDAEMONS=256
MAXPERIP=128
TCPDOPTS="-nodnslookup -noidentlookup"
AUTHMODULES="authdaemon"
AUTHMODULES_ORIG="authdaemon"

The rest of the configuration is unchanged in both authdaemon and imap.
I haven't been
able to see if there are other options i could tune to abide the
problem.

I run vpopmail v5.2.1.

I know it isn't the vpopmail library or anything of file permissions and
such, as the pop3d demon provided by qmail works perfectly when imap
authentication fails. When i use Courier's pop3d service, it fails just
as the imap does.

Does anyone have a tip of what is wrong? Anyone had the same problem?

By the way, everyting else works perfectly. It's just the authentication
that fails. Thanks
for making courier-imap.

Thanks,
best regards,
Aage Baardsen
