There are other things that use piddir. There's not going to be any conflict; except that everything that uses piddir will be affected.

options not available in the top-level ./configure --help and which are
undocumented unless one runs this command in all the subdirs which contain a
configure script?

Well, configure --help=recursive is going to do just that; which is actually a bit boring.
