Well, if Sam gets run over by a truck, the source is all out there - someone
else can pick it up.

As far as I can tell, Sam is the only person who can commit changes to the
repository. If enough people don't like Sam's decisions, and have the time
and inclination, they can always fork off the project into a separate one.
This is one benefit of the GPL - unlike qmail whose licence didn't allow
that to happen. Result: stagnation.

Having a single key architect is not necessarily a bad thing anyway: it can
mean the result has a more coherent design. I suggest you dig a little and
find out a bit about the design and philosophy (and other things such as the
quality of the documentation), and if it doesn't suit your taste, you can
always choose something else.

If my opinion counts for anything: courier-imap is the best Maildir-capable
POP3 and IMAP server out there. I can't really fault it apart from its log
messages, which typically aren't detailled enough to help debug
authentication problems. sqwebmail is a fast and capable webmail server,
also difficult to fault. Its calendaring function is too clunky to be useful
(but is disabled by default, so you can ignore it).

I don't use Courier MTA though. IMO it's not as flexible or mature as other
MTAs, and from what I've seen it seems to value rigid enforcement of
RFC-compliance over interoperability, which doesn't suit me.

Regards,

Brian.
