I am using courier 0.40.2 (yup, I should upgrade...) and have encountered a problem after changing BOFHCHECKDNS from 1 to 0.

My machine has the complete courier package installed, with imap, imap-ssl, esmtp and pop3 activitaed and has two interfaces. One of them points through a firewall to the outside world.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] COURIERBASE/sbin/esmtpd restart

courieresmtpd: don't know your IP address, no dice.

Can someone explain what this error message really means and why does the daemon complains in such a way?

Something is corrupted in your installation. sbin/esmtpd should be a link to a shell script that properly starts everything. In your case, it appears to link to the /usr/lib/courier/libexec/courier/modules/esmtp/courieresmtpd binary, which is not to be invoked manually.
