I managed to back-version enough stuff to get perlfilter working again
(whew!!).  As soon as the issue gets resolved for perlfilter.c I'll bring
things back into sync again.

The panic is off, even though my Debian dependency db is probably hopelessly
fubar until I can get back to perl 5.8.0 and libmime-base64-perl_2.12-4.1
which are the standard versions for the dist.
