Hi,

Once in a while I run into this problem, in that it takes a significant
amount of time to get the greeting when connecting to port 25.

What variables play into that? I use spamcop for RBL, could it be that
spamcop is slow in responding and that affects courier's response time?

Right now I'm experiencing delays of 30-40 seconds before getting the
greeting from courier, and certainly that is causing problems.

What configuration options do I have to improve this?

Or better yet, how can I debug this problem?

I'm running an older version of courier, 0.42.2 on linux. I'm not running
any filters, the only block I have is for spamcop.

It seems that if I stop courier and restart, connection times go back to
normal, with immediate greeting... but after a while it "degrades" again.

I have about 25,000 entries in the mailq, and this server is quite busy,
mostly, about 95%, just spam being blocked (around 500,000 spams blocked
by RBL alone in a matter of a few days). So the traffic is quite high. If
that is the problem, how can I remedy it? How can I tell for sure whether
that is indeed the problem?

I can't identify
why the delay is happening, and would greatly appreciate any pointers.

Thanks
Ricardo
