Beta releases of the next major version of Courier and Courier-IMAP are available for testing. New in the next release are virtual shared folders, and access control lists.
This is an alternative implementation of shared folders. The existing implementation, based on filesystem permissions, didn't go anywhere. It's still there. The differences between the two alternative implementations are enumerated in the file maildir/README.sharedfolders.html. The new implementation is based on access control lists, and may be used with virtual accounts.

Expect to invest some time reading the documentation on how virtual shared folders must be configured.
