no. the problem is to remove dependance on ssl.
I believe there is no way to tell courier (or courier-imap) not to care about openssl at all.
I think there should be a --with-ssl or similar configure option.
I tried to find such a solution some time ago I couldn't find any.
Would it be a complex option, Mr. Sam?
