Sander,

I'm afraid I can't help much here since we didn't have this type of problem come up. Also, since the name of the schema file has changed, there might be some other differences between the version we currently use and yours that is responsible (or differences due to the distribution, like I said before we use Mdk).
From what I understand, you're saying that, in the situation where you get the error, Courier has already passed the authentication phase and LDAP is already out of the picture, and, the 550 error is a Courier reported error, right?

The only suggestions I can think of would be:
- Remove all authentication modules from courier except LDAP to make sure you're not getting interference from some other area that might distract you.
- Turn up the log details on LDAP to follow as much of the interaction between Courier and Openldap and try and catch where is's going off course. Verify which ldap fields and the values that are getting looked up.
- Courier's own log's should have some clues.
- Check Courier's change log for some clues, sometimes there are subtle differences that don't change documentation but change the way you have to look at what you're reading...
- Last of all, ask Sam about situations that provoke this particular error. He was the one that got me on the right track with the 2 problems we had when we started off (and just for the record none of them were Courier's fault).

If you want send me an example of the info for one of your virtual users in LDAP and also of your Courier configuration regarding authldap I'll look it over and see how it compares with what we have.

Regards,
Eugenio Ruivo

Hi Eugenio,

thanks for all the help. The current schema is authldap.schema, once I found it in the sources, setting up LDAP authentication was not so difficult (well, except for the fact it took me a while to figure out Courier uses a v2 bind for non-tls connections). Authentication now works except for the fact that it doesn't seem to find the account when sending mail; it results in a "550 User Unknown" error. Do you know of any way too figure out why it is giving me this error?

Kind Regards,
Sander Holthaus

Sander,

We built the rpm (mandrake) for courier which places the schema in the standard location /etc/openldap/schema/. The files is courier.schema (I don't know if Sam has changed this in the latest versions, I would think not).
Our virtual configuration uses only the minimum configuration objectclasses top and CourierMailAccount.
The users are completly virtual regarding our servers, they reside on a totaly separate branch of the ldap directory and exist only to the mail server.

Hope this helps a little, any more questions drop me a line.

Regards,
Eugenio Ruivo

Hi Eugenio,

I've already set up an working LDAP-server, but I'm not too good with scheme's, so acutally I it would be a great help if I had a scheme that Courier uses for LDAP-authentication. I read on several websites that it was supplied with Courier, but I cannot seem to find it?

We've got it set up working without any problems. I'd say that the complicated part would be more understanding LDAP than getting Courier working with it. I'd suggest concentrating on that first.
If you have any specific questions let me know I'll try to give a hand.
