Yes, I already thought about this way. But is this safe? As far as I understand, you should normally not access the subfolder directories (like .ABC) directly. For example, if you want to add a folder DEF as a subfolder of ABC, you have to use
maildirmake -f ABC.DEF ~/Maildir
When you're creating folders, that's correct. However, when delivering to folders that already exist, giving the full path to the maildir that you want to use for delivery is the only available means, and as best as I can determine is documented as the proper means.
Then "modify" your IMAP account configuration in Kmail and set the "Prefix to folders" setting to "INBOX".
But then I'm not able to access the top level INBOX, right? So I still have to deliver mail to a subfolder of INBOX.
No, you'll still have access to the INBOX, and all other folders will appear at the same level. They're only displayed as subdirs of the inbox normally because kmail doesn't use the server-provided namespace.
