After around 8 hours of uptime, the IMAP server stops showing messages.
When you login to SquirrelMail, it will display the error message
"connection dropped by imap server". Our ThunderBird users will just
say "connecting to imap server". However, when I telnet into the smtp
or imap servers I am authenticated but the command "examine inbox" will
not work until I reboot the server.

Define "will not work". You could mean that there's no response from the server, or the examine gets bounced back with some error.

From the context, you probably mean no response. This sounds like a
resource issue with your system. Especially since you've mentioned that
you're running RHEL4, which is fresh out of the oven, and hasn't been
battle-tested; especially since a reboot clears everything up. You're
probably running out of something: memory, or swap space, or something else.

This is what system administrators get paid for: to analyze what's ailing,
and what's running low, and what to do about it. You'll need to run through
the usual suspects -- run top, vmstat, et al, to see what's going on. If
you're looking at a hung imapd process, use strace to find out what it's
going, etcâ

Thanks, Steve

Once I

Define "stops accepting requests", specifically: IMAP, POP3, or SMTP
requests.

I turned on auth debugging and found this error message:

courierd: SHUTDOWN: respawnlo limit reached, system inactive
courierd: Loading STATIC transport module libraries

This is a normal message, and does not indicate that anything's wrong.
