This is my first time using this forum so if I break edicit I am
sorry. I am currently in charge of a small server hosting a web site
and email. We are in need of adding some additional email accounts.
My knowladge in Linux is extreamly basic but in computers in general
is well. We already have the server running and everything works
fine, but reading many FAQs and tutorials and what not on adding more
accounts I have no idea how to add another email account to our
current list. We are using this Courier IMAP thing, and I was reading
a lot that there should be a etc/userdb file. Aparently maybe two one
being a .dat. Also there should be a shadowuserdb and maybe a pswrd
file too. Well there is are two files one named shadow and the other
-shadow. Then there is a pswrd fileas well. My problem is aparently
when you add the user you edit the userdb file when you exc-
# userdb "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" set home=/home/vmail \
mail=/home/vmail/Maildir-john-example \
uid=UUU gid=GGG
Well the userdb doesn't exist. I considered making it again but using
the mkuserdb and pw2userdb in the install folder but I am afraid of
making things worse on the server and losing the email we do have. I
am thinking maybe the people who origionally installed the IMAP stuff
maybe did it a diffrent way. I searched through the system and can't
find any userdb file with the current email users info in them.
Although the pswrd files contain current info along with the shadow
file. So my question is..what do I do. Will I lose current info if I
make a new userdb file? Is there a way to find out which db file my
setup is using to access the infomation? Is there a different way to
setup the email that is not included in the FAQ and HELP files. I
have looked through tons of files and am short on answers. The adding
of accounts looks simple. The server and everything already works,
but I just need to add a new email account. Is there a way around the
userdb file? I haven't worked up the nerve to run any of the
makeuserdb files or anything like that. I may be totally off in what
I am thinking but my assumption is to just run the above cmd,
inputting the correct information of course, after creating the dir in
the location of the rest of them, then setting the pw, and then
creating the userdb. The problem I guess I have is the userdb file
doesn't exist. Also in some of the files in the install directoy of
IMAP, I was reading the code on the makedb files and others. I do
have php and html experience and it seems similar, but I saw that in
those files the dir to put the userdb is infact the etc/ folder. Can
the email function without the userdb file? If I make it again does
it add the current accounts? I was going to play around with it some
but it seems that IMAP stuff is pretty spread out in the system and I
don't know what I should back up. Sorry for my lack of Linux
knowladge, but I am trying my best just to add a little friggin
account and it seems it should be easy but I am having a terrible
time. Any and all help will be much appreciated as I am looking for a
solution before the end of May. Again I am sorry if I am out of line
or breaking edicit or anything. If I am emailing or posting in the
wrong spot please let me know. Thanks for the help.
