This check is hard coded into the source code. So for SMTP, you must edit the code and recompile. But if you can get these programs which are sending mail to <username> to use sendmail instead of SMTP, sendmail will add the default domain to any address that doesn't include one. So sending to <username> will work in that case, assuming what your really want is <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.
