Ok, so I can then assume then that courier is connecting to the correct mx 
host to send the mail.

I cannot see much from the logs that is going to help me track down the 
problem. I can telnet into port 25 of the remote host and queue a message. 
The only oddity that I see is when I manually connect to the remote mx, I 
must issue a carraige return before I get the 220 banner greeting. Would 
this be a likely cause of the standoff between the two mta's ??

Remote host is "Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 5.0.2195.6713" :-(
