Cheers, spot on. It was not running. There must have been a Debian update, which installed new versions of the courier packages, with paths different from what they were before. However, the new init script was named /etc/init.d/courier-authdaemon.dpkg-dist with the old one still in place. No wonder things didn't start properly. So I moved the new script to the right place, started the auth daemon, and everything is good again.
