If you're at such at early stage, you still have a chance to dump Qmail and vpopmail, and replace them with something more modern. Qmail is abandoned software, that's barely on life support. It's understandable if someone has to maintain an existing qmail install, but, in my opinion, nobody in their right mind should even think of installing it on a new server. That version of Courier-IMAP is ancient, historically vpopmail was plagued with bugs, and vpopmail support has been dropped from the current version of courier-authlib and courier-imap, due to a lack of an active maintainer.

You're looking at a dead end here. It's time to move on.
