My absolute dismay regarding the length of this thread is two-fold:
1) Clearly this is a vendor-localized packaging problem. Get that person
onto the lists and get some answers out of them. Really, they should
have spoken up by now, or this thread should have occurred on the
unbuntu lists for a few weeks before leaking over. I suspect they're
lurking.
2) Threads here are normally short and concise -- A solid grasp
of TLS/SSL/PKI (Creating CAs, Certs, Singing, etc.), package
administration (apt*, rpm*, pkg_*, deselect*, yum*), and general
user-land debugging (Toolchain, etc.) are a pre-requisite for
discussion here.
I will concede, however, that after using it for some 6+ years, if one
does not have a strong grasp of PKI fundamentals, there does exist no
good OpenSSL documentation *anywhere* in the known universe. :)
I'm glad you got your problem fixed, though. Now consider migrating to
FreeBSD. Our package maintainer does a superb job. ~BAS
