Hi,

we currently run Courier 0.61.1, and we have the strange problem that sending mail via smtp + ssl is quite slow. We're talking about 10-15 seconds from pressing the send button until the mail is sent.

Compared to an nearby Postfix SMTP with SSL, speed is 5-10 times lower.

When sending mail from another client (both clients behind an german T-Com ADSL) I even get timeouts when sending mail, in 99% of the cases the 1st mail sent to the courier server produces an timeout. The 2nd try usually works, but is still quite slow.

We did already tune TCPDOPTS with "-nodnslookup -noidentlookup".

Even setting BOFHCHECKDNS=0 in all esmtpd config files did not speed up things.

Load on the server is below 1 usually, the sending delay is always there and is always of the same duration.

Any hints, I'm quite clueless where to search further on?

kind regards,

Markus
