The error message is coming from the OpenSSL library. I am not familiar with OpenSSL's particulars, but this is a plausible proposition. It's quite feasible that OpenSSL explicitly detects getting a cleartext HTTP request when it's expecting an SSL handshake. I dimly recall that Apache does, or did, respond on an HTTP request on an HTTPS port with some static explanatory message.
