Using userdb, is there a way to disable an account for a user so that
they can no longer authenticate with the server?

I know that I can simply reset the password, but I would prefer a
solution that would let me disable and then re-enable the account
without messing with the existing password.

If you're using systempw, you can add an imappw/pop3pw/esmtppw fields, which by default override systempw, and set them to some random password.
