Just catching up on months of missed Coworking Google group reading. I've been running C4 Workspace here in San Antonio since June 2009. Unfortunately we are due to close our doors next week. We know coworking is the right concept for a city like SA in terms of how the city says it wants to grow. But it seems it's not the right time for it yet.
As you will read and hear on this list community is core to coworking space success. I thought I had enough business and social media juice to get a community to coalesce so I built a space. I was wrong. Take time to get coworking off the ground and build a following for it then launch a space. Our tale of woe is that got behind in our rent and signed some long term contracts for cable and alarm that we will still have to get out from under after we are closed. Just don't go there. Build a community that is willing to pitch in and take the ride with you. It is SO worth it. I have had a great time in the space and with the people I've met and worked with. And they have too. We have our Bon Voyage party on Sunday night. Not a sad occasion but more like an Irish wake to celebrate coworking and it possibilities. After October I will start doing some coworking pop-ups around town (Dang! I thought that was MY bright idea!). To All of You on the List: you are all great mentors and teachers and cheerleaders. Hope to participate more in the future. Cheers!
