I am really mystified at these results; particularly the fact that the
module is fine in one environment and not in another. 

I don't have access to a Mac, but it would be a help if you could run
the test program logic.t manually with the command line -d 1000, i.e.
Mac equiv of the unix command line:

# ./logic.t -d 1000

and send me the output. The -d option tells the test to print some more
info which I hope will help.
