Throughout Thai History, rivers have been the highways
in to the countryside, and canals the streets of the towns. Today, despite
the dominance of cars and trucks, villagers prefer to paddle their boats
to market, carrying produce they have risen before dawn to harvest. in
the market, they sell their goods to other vendors or to merchants from
town markets. So brisk is the business that by 9 a.m., most vendors are
already paddling back home with the day's earnings and the few goods they
have purchased for household use.

Each
morning, monks walk through villages with their alms bowls which are filled
with rice and curries by the faithful. In regions cut by many streams, the
monks paddle small sampans through the canals, stopping at houses to receive
their daily meal which they share with the older monks. |
