Community centres for people suffering from AIDS Express New Service 13 Sep 2008 11:15:00 AM ISTBHUBANESWAR: In a novel bid to give voice to the people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAs) in the State, Orissa State AIDS Control Society is planning to set up community radio centres in urban areas. The radio centres will be run by the PLHAs. They would not only produce the programmes, post-production work will also be carried out by them. This is being planned keeping in view All India Radio (AIR) as the platform. The ultimate objective is to come up with a dedicated radio transmitter so as to launch a FM Radio station. ''We have assessed the field areas where such radios can be set up. The full proposal for the plan will be placed before the executive committee of OSACS for approval soon,'' sources said. In fact, the community radio will be started on a pilot basis in at least three slum areas of the capital where the concentration of PLHAs is substantial. If successful, it will be the first such effort in India. As per the plans, PLHAs will develop the content and edit them on their own. The Orissa State AIDS Control Society will fund the project so that studios can be set up in the identified slum areas. ''The scale will be small but it will be a big leap towards giving PLHAs a strong voice in the society,'' the sources added. The plan includes training of the PLHAs too. The programme will be barely for 30 minutes a week and AIR is likely to air the content across multiple stations. The OSACS also sees corporates and the State Government departments joining hands through sponsorship to sustain it in the future so that the FM Radio plan can be realised. The programmes would feature issues relating to HIV/AIDS and an array of problems that haunt the PLHAs. Besides, the society is also starting village resource centres at Ganjam to launch interactive sessions with PLHAs. Ten villages have been identified so far where multimedia set-ups will be installed and satellite linkage will be provided. Every week, two hours of interactive sessions are planned through the VRCs.
