Dear Friends,
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is starting a Certificate
Programme in Community Radio (in English) with effect from January 2009.
It is a six-month course in the distance learning mode, but incorporates a
10-day internship at a functional community radio station. A advertisement
inviting applications from students will appear in newspapers next week. The
details can also be found at the IGNOU website ignou.ac.in.
The course fee is Rs. 4000 + Rs. 200 Application Fee. CEMCA has offered 150
scholarships for students of this course.Please encourage your volunteers to
take up this course, which offers a very comprehensive training in radio
broadcasting and management of a low cost radio station. The course has been
designed with special emphasis on understanding community, assessment of
community needs and preparation of programme content with community
participation. As a student will have to bear the cost of travel and stay at
the CR station for Internship, preference will be given to students from
living in close proximity to CR stations.
The Internship component of this course will be at a functional community
radio station close to the student's place of residence and in keeping with
the local language proficiency of the applicant. CR stations willing to
offer internship facilities can sign an MOU with IGNOU. They will be paid
Rs. 1000 per student. In addition one/two person/s from CR station will be
appointed student counselor to guide the student during Internship and
assess his/her performance. Payment to the Counselor will be done separately
and as per IGNOU norms. Students will be sent in groups of 4-6 and for the
January 2009 Session, the internship will be held in the month of May 2009
only.
If you are interested in offering the facilities of your station to IGNOU
for Internship, kindly fill up the Proforma Form placed below and send it

CR Stations interested in offering Internship facility will be called for a
meeting proposed to be held in Delhi in the second half of December 2008. The
meeting aims to:
- Identify the facilities required for the Internship
- Nature of guidance expected by the student
- Explain the Assessment system of IGNOU
- Sign a MOU with IGNOU to formalise the acceptance of the CR station as
a Internship Center
For this meeting, you will have to send the Station Manager or any other
person authorised to sign, on behalf of the CR Station Management, the MOU
with IGNOU. As soon as we get your response to this mail, a copy of the
proposed MOU and date for the meeting will be intimated.

At the community radio station the student will gain hands-on experience of
working at a functional community radio station. The schedule of work
day-wise will be as below:
1. Understand the organizational structure of the CR Station – Station
Manager, staff, Management and Programme committee composition and
transmission details
2. Study the time slots of original broadcast, repeat broadcast and
understand how these time-slots have been decided
3. Observe one full day's broadcasts and learn to make entries in the
cue-sheet of broadcast and log book entries. Also find out the different
formats used by the programme producers
4. Study the composition of the programme policy committee and
management committee of the station and identify
i) Members from Community
ii) External Members and their status
iii) Staff of Educational Institution/NGO/KVK
5. Understand the technical set up of the station:
i) How many studios
ii) System of Recording & Archiving
iii) System of editing and the software used
iv) Technical details of transmission equipment
v) Location of Antenna and its reach
6. Observe studio recording of talk, discussion and music and learn
operation of the recording console
7. Learn how the field equipments are used by station volunteers
8. Write a report on the community around the community radio station,
their demographic profile, Listening habits and availability of radio sets
and nature of participation in the stations activities:
a) In programmes
b) In management
c) Total number of community volunteers and nature of their assignments
9. Make an assessment on the kind of programme that the community wants
to hear from the community radio and how they can contribute towards making
the station more popular.
10. Make one programme duration 15 - 20mts, using field based / studio based
recordings and interaction with community. (*2 Credits*)
