This is NLIU, Bhopal, MP, and for the benefit of the university, I want to set up a radio. The range required is 500 mts, for music and voice transmission. HAM radio does not allow this, and considering this is a law university, I do not want to set up a pirate station. Hence, isn't there a legal option of doing this? And also, I have absolutely no technical know-how, and the article about setting up a pirate station really helped. Please, help me out. The simplest option, given your constraints, is to set up a streaming audio setup on WiFi. Anyone with a laptop or a handset supporting WiFi (many do, these days) will be able to access the content. The less simple option is to use your legal strength to oppose and knock down the restrictions on broadcasting that prevent simple applications such as yours from getting airtime simply and cheaply (think of poor communities rather than 'rich' lawyers) on the one hand, and enable powerful businesspeople, on the other, to make more money by filling the airwaves with LCD (lowest common denominator) content. Incidentally, if the 500 mt range mentioned in your mail is within the legally owned premises of the University, then according to the rulebook on radio transmissions there should be no objection to your setting up an FM microstation either, as long as you do not broadcast into public space. However, don't expect it to function without endless interference from ill-trained and ill-informed government officers of various departments.
