Yeah, while I went with the solution galehar suggested, I have second thoughts.

"Everyone" being monsters or players?

The former might work, the latter not really.

No. You get bazaars, but 1. at an exhorbitant cost (4 levels including
having to acquire gold), 2. very late on.

Lemme quote excerpts from the Mantis entry:

me:
# Our options:
# * disable spriggans
# It'd suck to forbid a race for such a reason.
# * make spriggans Herbi 2 in ZotDef
# Trivial to code, dpeg didn't like that.
# * a Zot ability to create food or fill nutrition
# Would be either too costly early on or trivially cheap later.
# * a Zot ability to convert corpses to vegetable food
# Existing permafood: allows stockpiling, unthematic. New type of perishable
# food: coding needed.

mageykun:
# How hard would it be to just spawn monsters with permafood carried in
# inventory?

galehar:
# The food clock is irrelevant in Zotdef. Game rhythm is dictated be the
# waves of enemies, there is no grinding. How about simply disabling food
# in Zotdef? No hunger, no eating.

So, what would you prefer?
