Dear colleagues,

Please find below an announcement for a PhD position with the University of
Teramo and Takin.solutions. If you know suitable candidates please feel
free to share the information. The application deadline is short.

Takin.solutions is proud to announce it is co-sponsoring a PhD candidate
with the University of Teramo on the topic, “The intersection of semantic
modelling and historical research”. The accepted candidate will work with
scholars from the School in Higher Educational Research (
https://unitedoc.it/) and semantic data experts at Takin.solutions (
https://www.takin.solutions/) in creating a research project that explores
the cutting edge in applying semantic data modelling techniques to pushing
forward historical research.

The suitable candidate will have a relevant background in historical
research (the topic of research for the PhD must fall in the space of early
modern history) and research data management, ideally with some
pre-existing knowledge of formal ontology and semantic data modelling
techniques. The description of the project scope can be found in the
attached document.

The specific description of the topic is:

“The intersection of semantic data modelling and historical research

The aim of this research project is to formulate a set of historical
questions and to develop a set of methodologies through the approach of
digital humanities. The PhD student will work with ontologies (in
particular CIDOC CRM) and adapt them to suitable platforms. An important
part of the work will be the study of historical case studies and the
development of a corresponding model. More specifically, the PhD will look
at building semantic data models adequate to support historical research
questions, working with real case studies from the early modern
Mediterranean. such as, for example, diasporas, forced and voluntary
migrations. Or trade dynamics. Building from real world historical data as
use cases. the researcher will explore the affordances that semantic data
model ling offers to support and facilitate an increasingly digital first
historical research practice. The research will thus look at the
applicability of well known ontological models such as CIDOC CRM lo
historical

research questions but also look at the suite of tools and methods around
semantic data management that need to be mastered to support historical
research. The researcher will explore how semantic data methods from
semantic data modelling to its application in real research scenarios. can
be ameliorated through the chaining together of appropriate tools and
techniques for creating and working with semantic historical data in a FAIR
context.”

The PhD specifically aims to create an intersection between formal academic
research and the development of professional skills such that the
successful candidate will complete both a research PhD and walk away with
applicable professional skills in the domain of semantic data management.
