Hi Everyone,

Sharing this to a wider audience in case others might be interested. The next round of UCOSP & Open Academy will be starting in January. This means the program is gearing up now.

This program is similar to Google Summer of Code. It matches (3 to 8 usually) senior students with mentors from open source projects. Students complete features, fix bugs, and generally get involved in the community in exchange for a grade at the end of their course.

The students are pre-filtered by the participating Universities, and the program. This means the calibre of student is very high. In my experience, the typical student in this program is usually quite a bit more capable and has more initiative than GSoC.

The program kicks off with a 3 day code sprint in California in January.

Mentor time commitment is:

 * Roughly a few hours up front to meet & help students get going.
Likely less if your project's getting started material is decent.
 * 3 days for a weekend code sprint at Facebook's HQ in California in
January. Last year there was a travel subsidy and likely will be again.
 * Roughly 1 to 2 hours per week between January & April for weekly
stand-up meeting, code review, and interaction with the interns.
 * Roughly 3 to 5 hours for feedback and participating in the grading
   process.

If you are interested in participating, please let me know ASAP. The deadline to complete a form to include your project is October 30, 2013.

Cheers!

Andrew
