I'm not sure the Java-centric packages are a great target. For
real Java development most people will want an SDK I imagine.
E.g., a src.zip seems important and not present in a JRE, at least
as generated by default by jlink...
That's right.
We'll see when we start adopting it in EPP. Maybe we could try to have
JustJ shipping a whole JDK for the case of Java-centric packages.
In principle I think only the src.zip is the missing important part
though clearly all the tools like javac are not present either. The
src.zip is 56MB so is rather huge. The full JDK is on the order of
200MB so also rather humongous...
Anyway, I wouldn't brainstorm too much about it right now as there are
still important and enlightening intermediary steps to perform first.
Yes we can communicate more broadly. An article in the newsletter
is forthcoming too.
OK, I think it's better to wait for the newsletter article and then
we'll link to it via the @EclipseJavaIDE account. If you think it's
better to tweet now, we can also do it, just ask ;)
No, in combination is probably best.
One of my most significant remaining concerns is the update
channel for new versions of the JRE. I'm not sure we should be
putting the JREs in the release train repository, for example..
I imagine EPP could take care of it -at least partly- as it defined
the available update sites. We'll discuss that a bit later after
2020-06 is done, when we start playing with JustJ in EPP.
Yes. When we come up for fresh air will be good. Of course via
touchpoints the JRE installation itself could add updates sites as well...
Other issues that concern me:
1. The fact that Java 11 is LTS so I imagine many people will be most
comfortable with that version, not a bleeding edge latest release.
2. Perhaps AdoptOpenJDK will become an approved source (which helps
with Java 11 LTS), but that presents even more choices of what to
put in a package.
We shall see when we have more time. (I'm moving June 15th, so the
release timing is terrible for me this year.)
