I also have had a rough time with Crypto++, having to do 
a bit of reverse engineering.  But what libraries do you 
envisage as more suitable?  OpenSSL seems to be purely 
reverse engineering, instead of merely a bit more 
reverse engineering than there should be.  Rough though
Crypto++ was, openssl seemed rougher to me.

The heavy use of templates in Crypto++ seems fine to me.
