Hi, I'd like to add some numbers to this. I'm building (and using) CS on an
AMD Athlon XP 1800+ (no idea of the exact model, sorry), 1.4GHz, with 512MB
memory and 500MB swap disk. Building took 1-2 hours until I updated from SVN
one or two weeks ago. Since then I experience the problems described: On
hitting cs_pyth.o the build process comes to a grinding stop. First memory
gets filled, the kswapd starts claiming more and more processor time until
the whole system becomes irresponsive (logging in and starting top took me
about twenty minutes from a remote terminal, the time between me hitting a
key and the monitor switching on from standby is about ten seconds). I've
let it run for >6 hours, IIRC even >10, then wimped out. Once I re-ran jam
after that and building skipped cs_pyth.o (whyever). Two more targets
failed, but IIRC they depended on Python bindings. However, build time was
fine.

Also, I'd rather call it stating an unpleasant fact, far be it from me to
complain, especially here. :)

Liebe Grüße,
Sebastian Hoffmann
