Then there are those amazing Managers who can't fashion a vision to save themselves, but it is a rare individual who can exercise both strong leadership and great management skills. Deidre Butler, CIO of Christchurch City Council, is one such party, and has used her skills to establish a successful IT career within both private sector and government in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. Passionate about adding value to businesses, Deidre also understands that if a business is to be grown organically, its leaders must understand its culture and way of working. Up until 1996, Deidre was Manager for a Global Manufacturing Company. In 1996 she joined the Ministry of Health, first becoming Manager Information Technology, and then CIO, a greatly expanded role. In 2002, the then Department of Courts, chose Deidre as its first CIO. Following the merger of Justice and Courts she left to establish her own business, pursuing consulting work in the private sector, vendor community and government organisations. Now in 2005 Deidre leads and manages in her role as CIO of Christchurch City Council. She has twin 6 year old daughters and is currently in the process of relocating with them to Christchurch, they'll share their 10 acre lifestyle property with horses, donkeys and other assorted animals.
