Hi
I'd like to take this opportunity to publicly thank and acknowledge the work
done by the speakers at Friday's Employing Knowledge Workers gig. I was
really impressed by the thought and dedication they put into their
presentations, and the passion with which they spoke.
Resources from the presentation will be put on the Software Cluster website
in the fullness of time, available to members.
The contributors were:
- Richard Foster and Gerald Van Looy from TMP worldwide, HR management
consultants, who spoke about identifying the culture of your company and
positioning your company and position strengths for prospective staff. They
developed a template for self-assessment that people at the workshop filled
out as an exercise
- Richard Cunliffe from Buddle Findlay, who spoke about the Employment
Relations Act and other relevant legislation such as the Privacy and Human
Rights Acts. He spoke about fish-hooks and grey areas in these laws and
their implications for knowledge employers
- Madeleine Hawkesby and Denise Wightman from Duncan Cotterill talked about
the IP implications of employment and showed how comprehensively these need
to be addressed in a contract - for instance, a restraint of trade clause
must be very specific to be of any use.
- Steve Smith outlined how his company, Alchemy, attracted a software
engineer using HR consultants to their best effect.
There were discussions about the best advertising options, and Steve showed
how he had used the Alchemy website to filter and pre-qualify applicants.
- Adrian Watson gave a great presentation on the day-to-day aspects of
leadership and managing staff - including the very basic issue of letting
them know what you want them to achieve. He touched on how delegation and
letting them thrive, and gave interesting research results on what motivates
staff to stay, as well as the worsing crisis in knowledge staff demand.
- Kevin Taylor told the story of his company, Niche Software, as it
expanded, including the employment of a leased executive, software
developers (he added Student Job Search to the source of good staff),
building a marketing and management infrastructure, along with insights into
the day-to-day running of a business as it grows and becomes less bound by
what's between your own ears.
Thanks again you guys - you added an important body of knowledge for us. :)
