Workshop has also a significant flaw vs the current fastdl system, which
is maps not preloading on background. If new map(s) is added to the
cycle, you have to cycle the server through the map(s) before it can be
played. Otherwise it will download at the end of the current one and
players will leave, because they have short temper.
The documentation is kind of lacking and flawed in spme parts. For
example I as a workshop map contributor, used different name for each
time i updated the map on workshop. This due to someone taking the map
off from workshop and putting it to their fastdl so they didn't have to
use the workshop. But the server operators said to me that "can you not
change the name because they have the maplists with certain name". They
didn't have any idea that you could simply put the workshop map id into
the mapcycle in order to get it work the same way.
But Niko you are wrong about compression. Workshop maps are compressed,
they eat nearly the same size of diskspace as bzip2 packed maps. There
is only a slight difference.
There are also times when workshop has been down and was unavailable to
download maps but these luckily have decreased.

I don't support workshop maps for these reasons:
1) The documentation is messy, gameserver operators just don't get it
2) it takes a lot of extra time and efforts to get it right
2) Maps show as /workshop/blablabla/mapname instead of just mapname
3) fastDL is geolocated to where I want it to be and doesn't go down
as often as steamcommunity and related services do
4) compression of the maps to their best size is guaranteed when self
hosting
5) never trust the cloud

So now when can we ditch these webapi_authkey.txt files and simply the
things? I think you would want server operators preferring the
workshop over
mapgroups. Why make operators go another step and get a 2nd key?
Please make
it easy for operators to use the workshop or they wont. I can't
believe some
big hosts still don't support workshop and instead try to maintain
their own
fastdl!
