Manipulation of background image sizes is something the will have to wait for CSS3, well off in the future.


For your purpose, I would do one of two things:
1) Forego the image and use a border instead. The border will expand, but won't contain the crossed corners the image has.


2) Explore the rounded corner techniques which use images for the corners, and instead of using rounds, uses crosses.
